Middleburg Riding Interscholastic Equestrian Team

Dear Middleburg Riding Students and Parents

Middleburg Riding is a member of the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (‘IEA’), the governing body for middle and high school equestrian competitions. We travel to other schools within the region to compete in Hunt Seat Equitation.

Under the program, riders of different levels can compete. Levels range from Beginner Walk/Trot to Advanced Varsity, which competes over fences as well as on the flat. IEA also now offers an option for adults.

Riders do not need to bring their own horse. In fact, it is beneficial to ride the team’s horses, since in competition team members ride the host school’s horses which are are assigned by draw. Competing on a horse you don’t know is both fun and challenging, and adds an element of teamwork to what is ordinarily an individual sport.

Middleburg Riding is excited and proud to offer the opportunity for its students to participate in IEA. To be eligible, riders must be enrolled in at least two times per week lessons. There will also be a pre-season camp offered in August that is not mandatory but is highly recommended.

Competitions are held on weekends. Riders may compete five times during the season, which will run from September to February. Riders accumulate points for their placings that give them the opportunity to qualify for Zone Finals. A placing at Zones qualifies for Regionals, and a placing in the Regional Finals gives riders a chance to compete in the National Finals.
